The GetTeamGear Bat Buying Rundown

Many people buy softball bats everyday, Some frequently asked questions are, "What weight is right for me?" along others like, "What length should I use, and what is the drop?" Well there are alot of aspects to consider before buying "just any 'ol bat" this is to help you make the right decision. Length is something to consider when buying a bat the right length usually can be determined by placing the bat on the ground and if the end of the bat comes up to your waist or upper thigh your doing alright so far. Next you might want to get the right weight for you, using one arm hold the bat straight out away from you for ten seconds. If you can't do this, the bat is to heavy! Always remember that the weight of the bat should vary depending on who is at the plate. "What is the drop of a bat?" The drop of a bat is the difference between the length and the weight, so if a 32" bat has a -10 drop its a 22oz bat. The thing to consider above all when buying a bat is comfort! Swing the bat and if something doesn't feel right, try another. If your buying online, (www.GetTeamGear.com) you might try going to a sporting store and trying a similar bat to get the feel. Choice is going to be up to you, but perfect feel means perfect swing.

Tigers Honor Fidrych

Baseball loses one of its most sensational rookie pitchers. Mark Fidrych died Monday, April 13, 2009 on his farm in Massachusetts from an apparent accident. He was 54. The Detroit Tigers honored Fidyrch with a moment of silence before today's baseball game against the White Sox.

Mark "The Bird" Fidrych was the American League rookie of the year in 1976 when he went 19-9 with a 2.34 earned run average. He spent all five of his major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, compiling a 29-19 record and a 3.10 ERA.

It was in his rookie year that he gained his most success. Fans packed Tiger Stadium that summer to watch The Bird pitch. And he was the only reason to watch the Tigers that season. Injuries curtailed his career and he retired after spending just five seasons with the Tigers.

Fidrych acquired the nickname "the Bird" because of his resemblance to the Big Bird character on the Sesame Street television show. His blonde, curly hair was not to be contained by his baseball hat.

During games, he would bend down and groom the mound with his hands, filling in holes. He would talk to the baseball and even slap high-five's with teammates in the middle of the diamond after a great play was made. It was all very genuine. And if you had the chance of seeing him play that summer, you knew it was something special.

Miracle on diamond for GetTeamGear pitcher

The 2009 softball season for GetTeamGear.com had been going well. A third place win in their first outing was a great start to the season. The team followed that tournament with a first place win on March 14 including a birth to Worlds in Detroit, September 24-27.

However, tragedy struck last week at the team's most recent tournament in Salt Lake City. Team member and pitcher, Steve Ward took a line drive shot to the forehead knocking him unconscious for several minutes. Steve was immediately taken to the hospital with severe fractures to the face. Reconstructive surgery was very successful and was released just 4 days later. The team is very thankful for the thoughts and prayers from those close to the team and in the softball community.

We are happy to report that Steve is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. Steve also plans to accompany the team to their next tournament in Delta, Utah.
